Leadership and Knowing Yourself
Take a moment to think about your leadership skills. What works well and what doesn't? What might you do to improve your performance? What are the areas you need to improve? How can you promote your employees' and your organization's success?
The key to great leadership is knowing yourself and not letting your stuff get in the way of helping others grow and building a productive workplace. The more you know yourself and the happier you are with yourself, the greater the chances you'll be able to transmit those qualities to your employees. The key is to be happy with yourself so you can treat people well.

Harsh Leadership
I'm not sure where the harsh approach to leadership started but, somewhere along the way, someone told people that they had to be hard on their employees. This leadership approach includes behaviors like shouting at employees, getting angry, expecting them to prove themselves or generally dominating and proscribing everything they have to do.
This approach has predictable results: Employees who come in solely for a paycheck and are scared of the boss. An approach I've found works much better is to move away from fear-based leadership to leadership where people are inspired to do work. This can be achieved by leading in a way that allows people to think and act on their own and that rewards them for the things they do well. It's also a positive idea to provide opportunities for education and growth.

Leadership and Communication
Think about your leadership style and how you communicate with others as well as the results you get. Effective leaders know how to talk with people in a way that motivates and validates them. It's not enough to give orders or talk at people, deeper communication is about understanding your employees and helping them motivate themselves.

Your Leadership Style and Workplace Functioning
Your leadership style is present in every part of your workplace. It shows in how you and the other people in the organization behave and how you relate to other companies and your clients. A big part of leadership training is developing a style that helps you and your employees behave in positive ways. As a leader, you decide what skills and abilities you cultivate in people as well as which behaviors you value.

Definition of Leadership Training
A practical working definition of leadership training is promoting behaviors that lead to desirable results. For example: Excellent leaders motivate their colleagues, employees and clients by communicating clearly, treating people kindly, planning instead of reacting, valuing self-awareness and delegating well. Deeper leadership training is about helping leaders lead themselves and others effectively.

Practice Kind Leadership
Leadership isn't solely about giving orders. It's much easier to tell people what to do than to motivate them from within. Think of leadership as an opportunity to show people how kind you are and how much you can get done without resorting to giving orders. Think of ways you can use kindness to get optimal results and motivate people to do better work because they want to rather than because they're told to.

Leadership Training that Goes Below the Surface
I ask leaders and organizations to consider leadership training as a way to look at things more meaningfully. We tend to spend a lot of time on superficial interactions while overlooking valuable elements like long-term behaviors and teaching people core skills like communication, collaboration, empathy and motivation. Focus on these skills and you'll enjoy leadership training that goes below the surface.

Lead By Relaxing More
A lot of well-meaning leaders think that leadership is about running around giving orders and hovering over people. It's remarkable how much better your results can be when you relax more and encourage people to think and make decisions or their own. Try relaxing more and letting go of the need to control thing sand you'll be better able to use people's talents and abilities to build a healthier and more productive workplace.
